A 16-year-old boy from Melbourne managed to break into the mainframe of Apple many times in a year. He did this by sitting at his home in Melbourne. He hacked into the main network of Apple and downloaded huge internal files of about 90 GB. He was also accessing the customer’s data without revealing his identity.

When asked, the teenager stated that he was a huge fan of the company and had always dreamed about working there. When Apple becomes aware of the intrusion, they contacted the US FBI, which referred the case to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

β€œAt Apple, we vigilantly protect our networks and have dedicated teams of information security professionals that work to detect and respond to threats. In this case, our teams discovered the unauthorized access, contained it, and reported the incident to law enforcement. We regard the data security of our users as one of our greatest responsibilities and want to assure our customers that at no point during this incident was their personal data compromised,” a company spokesman told Guardian Australia in a statement.

The guy had hacked into the network very smartly, by changing the IP addresses so as to avoid being tracked down. However, all his efforts went down the drain, when the AFP was able to track the serial number of one of the MacBooks which was used for hacking. The serial number was provided by the company stating that those devices were used for hacking.

When AFP raided the boy’s family home, they got their hands on 2 laptops, a mobile phone and a hard drive which matched the details given by Apple. All the sensitive documents which were hacked and downloaded were saved in a folder which was named “Hacky Hack Hack.” Reports about the incident stated that the boy had boasted a lot about his activities via

WhatsApp. The defense lawyer of that teen said that the boy was very famous in the international hacking communities. He also demanded to keep many details of the case to be secret, as revealing those details could put him in danger. However, the boy’s name was not made public as he was a juvenile offender.

The 16-year-old Apple hacker would be sentenced on 20 September 2018.
