We’re choosing the way,
We’ll do what it takes to get
To the top of the highest mountain
We’ll do anything, we got to prove ourselves
’cause we know
Everyone has heard this song at least once. But did anyone think that this, someday soon, will turn into reality?
The three-time Grammy awards nominee, superstar Akon, is all set to turn his vision of developing Africa and uplifting its economy for the future generations. Akon was born in Senegal, a country in West Africa. He spent almost 7 years of his childhood there and then his family shifted to Newark, New Jersey. Since then he has been splitting his time between the United States and Newark. Finally, he got settled in Newark. Growing up, Akon always had this vision of helping Africa develop as he had seen the miserable conditions in which the people in Africa live, especially the rural population. He has been doing good for the people of Africa for a long time. He has his own charity for underprivileged children called the ‘Konfidence Foundation’.
The rap star, however, is now on a mission to build a futuristic ‘CryptoCity’ in Senegal, West Africa, which will be trading exclusively in Akon’s own digital cash currency called “AKoin”. This new city will be built on a 2,000-acre land gifted to Akon by Macky Sall, the President of Senegal.
Though the city is under development, the AKoin is expected to be launched by early July. Akon disclosed his plans for the Cryptocity and AKoin in a panel on June 25, 2018, at the Cayynes Lions Festival of Creativity. Akon has argued that these digital currencies and their underlying blockchain can help the Africans to become less dependent on their Government. This city will be in a distance of fewer than 5 minutes from the West African State’s New International Airport.
“The only difference between the United States and Africa is in the way they are marketed. The United States markets themselves as the Land of Heroes and the Birthplace of Legends, whereas Africa doesn’t do that” – said Akon, in one of this interviews. This project of Akon aims at empowering Youth Entrepreneurship in Africa. His vision is to show the world what Africa really is capable of and uplift the overall status of Africa in the eyes of the world.
Since 2014, Akon has also been working on a project called “Akon Lighting Africa”. By way of this initiative, Akon has the motive of providing solar powered electricity across Africa. Till date, he has lit up more than 480 communities across 15 countries in Africa. Co-founders of “Akon Lighting Africa” are Samba Bathily and Thione Niang. They use solar equipment which is provided by Samba Bathily’s company, Solektra INT. Apart from public solar equipment like street lamps, domestic and individual solar kits also have been installed across 14 countries in Africa. This has led to a huge reduction in the amount of kerosene burnt to provide the light and energy, which in turn had fatal effects on the people. He has provided employment to over 5,500 locals, whose only job is to install and maintain the solar equipment.
Looks like he’s going to be ‘The Face of Developing Africa’ in the next few years!
